My Cat Died

Grandmother cat, she was. We stopped naming our cats after the first four or so; they were all toms who’d eventually wander off and get run over on the road that bisects the campus, or get killed by stray dogs, or some such.

Grandmother cat was the first female we took in. I don’t recall who we got her from; I think she was Nebu’s cat Speedy’s sibling. I remember her cowering under the fridge the day we got her; frightened to death of these giant legs who kept trying to rub her on the head.

Her personality changed the day we got her spayed by the Blue Cross, after two sets of litters (which produced Mother Cat, Big Fat, Wee One, and all the other siblings). Those fucking bastards took out her ovaries as well, which was needless and mean. I swear to Lucifer her personality changed after that. She became far more reticent and aloof. Eventually we shifted house and she refused to shift with us. She adopted another house instead; the Balraj’s. They fed her well, and she’d hang around their garden when she wasn’t off doing her own thing.

And it was in their garden that she died yesterday. Died painfully. Ripped apart by two stray dogs in her own home. Fucking dogs. Fucking dog-lovers. I hate them. I hate you. Have you ever heard of a pack of cats hunting down and killing a dog? They don’t need to. They don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Not like a horny, salivating, smelly, drooling, leg-raising mutt. Thoo! I remember when Dhurgoose lost one of his kittens (Salt, or was it Pepper?) to a pack of dogs as well. Bloody mongrels. Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, as Salvor Hardin used to say.

Dr B buried the mangled remains of Grandmother C in his garden at 11 last night.

I never used to understand why before, but don’t make fun of people who get upset when their pets die.

Dude, for once I agree with you. My condolences.

That aside, the next time I run over a dog, I promise to scream out loud “that’s for Pera’s pussy, you canine shite”.

  2. yuva Says:

Well, there have been several instances where neighbourhood cats have killed and eaten birds nesting in our garden and baby squirrels as well. That kinda makes me want to hate cats. And I have seen too many pups getting killed in steet dog politics. Survival of the fittest!

But sorry about your cat though.

  3. Perakath Says:

Yuva: Street dog politics! Now there’s something well suited for this country. Hordes of dogs travelling in overloaded vans with fluttering flags and pictures of ugly mugs on them.

Monty: Thank you. That will make me feel better. Just make sure he’s not a big-shot politician!

    RIP Grandmother Cat ):

Live has to go on and I guess even after living in a house with two dogs,an aquarium,a parrot, and my sibling I still want a pet cat.Cats have their own value amongst the pets.
The silver lining? The college cafe is full of cats. I think they’ll be in for treat for the next three years.

  6. Perakath Says:

Aniesha: Cunning. A cafe full of cats!

Jatti: Kat is here, under the bed!

Yeah, that’s why I don’t or won’t have pets. Losing a cat as a kid was sad enough.

I don’t get people who say cats aren’t affectionate like dogs are. Just because they don’t wag tails, jump on you and slobber all over you doesn’t mean they don’t love. I’d give anything to have my old cat press herself against my legs and purr that deep, contended, loving purr of hers.

That’s sad, being ripped apart by a bunch of bugger dogs :(

You have stray dogs? I’ve heard of stray cats but never stray dogs.

Anyway, that’s terrible. I am sorry to hear that. That’s just as bad as my little girl and I mean that literally, she only weighs 6 lbs, escaping for two days over the winter. And of course it was during the coldest week. I thought for sure she froze to death. I couldn’t stop thinking about her out there stiff as a board. Luckily, I found her without a scratch or a cold bone in her body.

  9. Perakath Says:

Capn: I’ve never met anyone who hasn’t heard of stray dogs!! We have like a hundred in every neighbourhood of every village/town/city in India.

Did you lose your granddaughter for two days?!

Geetika: Yes, I found out yesterday that she didn’t die straightaway. She was injured and put to rest in a basket for a few hours before she died. It must have been painful. :’(

hey, i’m so sorry about your kitty… that’s a horrible way to go…

  11. Perakath Says:

Thanks. There’ll be a memorial service at the gates of the Heaviside Layer in due course.

  12. Childwoman Says:

I am sorry Perakath. Come here for a hug.

And thats a horrible way to die.

    RIP Dear Cat.

  13. Perakath Says:

    Thanks, yo. Hug away.

  14. capricorn1966 Says:

I lost my little girl cat. Dah…Isn’t that what the post is about? Cats? We don’t even have family owned dogs running around, it’s against the law, let alone stray ones.

  15. Parul Says:

    Am sorry.

  16. Perakath Says:

    Thanks, P.

  17. Manju Says:

I dont keep pets and discourage others to keep them and frown upon those who do, cause I think its selfish.

sorry about your cat though. Bye Kitty!
